Praga Magica: Prague as a Place of Memory and Vision in George Eliot, Anthony Trollope and George Sand

George Eliot and Anthony Trollope made short visits to Prague in the mid-19th century were fascinated by such places as Jewish Quarter with its old synagogue or Charles Bridge Baroque statues. They used these motifs some of their works: The Lifted Veil Daniel Deronda Nina Balatka. Their portrayal Prague, however, is very much based on image Praga magica, legends, mysteries magic. This article argues that shift focus from statue St John Nepomuk, which appears Balatka, might have been motivated not only admiration bridge decorations they saw during but also semantically rich motif saint’s Sand’s Consuelo, a novel was popular Britain at time.
